Wheatgrass On The Radar

Little did I know of wheatgrass and wheatgrass juice, let alone wheatgrass juicers. I thought it was just another one of those herbal fads that make you gag with its awful smell and bitter taste and offer false claims on remedying certain diseases to persuade the growing health-conscious public and the typical consumers. But what I found out was that wheatgrass is the new natural way to go.

I used to be in the same page as you are. What is it? Wheatgrass is the young, slender grass blades of the common wheat plant. Its extract is an earthly green juice which is in effect of its high chlorophyll content, and it is buzz-worthy for its essential amino acids, enzymes, minerals and vitamins. It would be much easier to grasp when stated as “it is packed with nutrients”. Therefore, wheatgrass is considered as beneficial to our health. Its 30 enzyme components make it a source of complete protein, which should be between 10 to 35% of the total calories we consume since protein is the main building block of the human body. Wheatgrass also provides more energy, thus it is a meal by itself.

Though it is not yet fully substantiated by scientific research, wheatgrass has been known to work wonders. It keeps the body well oxygenated by increasing our red blood cell count. It lowers blood pressure to an optimum level by its vasodilating physiology. It stimulates the thyroid glands and hormones to promote weight loss. It aids in digestion, cleanses the bloodstream and detoxifies the liver. It has both internal and external uses. The extracted juice from wheatgrass can also relieve an itchy skin when applied directly on it.

Well, yes, wheatgrass is all that, and that is why it is very visible in famous health food stores and that wheatgrass juice is on the main menu in juice bars. Some people even grow and juice their own. It usually costs $2 per juice shot and $15 for a tray of growing grass which can be delivered to and readily cut for juicing in your home. In order to do that, you would need a wheatgrass juicer. It is not like the regular juicer for it is well analyzed and manufactured to extract the juice and all the goodness of wheatgrass blades. It is carefully crafted so it would not destroy the enzymes and nutrients of the delicate grass blades in the process. So that’s the wheatgrass juicer, and now your concern is what it tastes like because in any case, it’s still grass. But the juice from a very young wheatgrass plant actually has a sweet honey-like finish. Smoothies or any other juice of your choice can be mixed with wheatgrass juice for refreshment with a natural feel and guilt-free extra nutrition. Kudos to wheatgrass for that!

Now, we don’t need to ask what, how, or why it is made available and advertised at all. Wheatgrass has become a great find in farm markets and local stores.

Wheatgrass and Wheatgrass Juicers

by admin on June 24, 2010

To squeeze juice from our favourite fruits and to extract juice from our leafy greens, we use the juicer. We press our oranges, lemons, and other citrus fruits at home on this kitchen tool with a cone-shaped ridged centre for fresh doses of Vitamin C. We use the mechanical juice extractor for our herbs to help us get to our “detox” goals.

But what exactly is that wheatgrass juicer we keep hearing about? More than that, why is the wheatgrass juicer becoming a must-have kitchen gear, rightly beside the blender and even the microwave.

First, let us take a quick rundown on some wheatgrass facts. Wheatgrass, is the young grass of the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. Wheatgrass is a natural source of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Its high chlorophyll composition nearly resembles our body’s haemoglobin. Its roots and stems can be used in herbal remedies after processing it through a wheatgrass juicer.

Wheatgrass has been known to alleviate conditions like the common cough and cold, fever, bronchitis, mouth and throat inflammations, and colitis, which is a bowel problem with an inflammation of the colon. However, there may be some precautions when it comes to integrating wheatgrass to general intake. With its several forms available in the market, a doctor must be consulted first when other medications are presently taken. You can never be sure these days, and you never know if some medicines may get in the way of wheatgrass benefits.

Wheatgrass today, is made easily accessible in the form of capsules, extracts, tablets, and tinctures. These kinds of wheatgrass are what I commonly refer to as commercial wheatgrass.

The big question is, why would you buy commercial wheatgrass when you can have the natural and real thing?

Get some seeds, soil and water, plant and after a few days you’ll have your own little wheatgrass garden. Simply harvest and cut these then stick it in your manual juicer.

With a wheatgrass juicer you can extract the juice, enzymes, fibre and other nutrients of each wheatgrass blade. Compared to high-speed electric wheatgrass juicers, it may look slower, but it definitely has its benefits.

Experts on nutrition and diet have long suspected electric and specifically centrifugal juice extractors to not have the same quality of extracted juice as that from a manual juicer. What’s more, recent designs have made the manual juicer really practical and simple to use. And contrary to popular belief, you won’t make up a sweat using a manual wheatgrass juicer as it’s extremely efficient at extraction.

With your wheatgrass juicer, you have the freedom to explore a lot of other healthy variations. Be it a salad dressing, smoothie, or tea. By eating, drinking, and refreshing the wheatgrass way, you become the expert to your own balanced diet, detoxification, enhancement of immune system, and repair of body tissues. All these are in your hands. And best of all get all the benefits of wheatgrass at home.

With your very own wheatgrass juicer, you can steer away from the commercialized wheatgrass, save money and go natural all the way, all the time.
