Little did I know of wheatgrass and wheatgrass juice, let alone wheatgrass juicers. I thought it was just another one of those herbal fads that make you gag with its awful smell and bitter taste and offer false claims on remedying certain diseases to persuade the growing health-conscious public and the typical consumers. But what I found out was that wheatgrass is the new natural way to go.
I used to be in the same page as you are. What is it? Wheatgrass is the young, slender grass blades of the common wheat plant. Its extract is an earthly green juice which is in effect of its high chlorophyll content, and it is buzz-worthy for its essential amino acids, enzymes, minerals and vitamins. It would be much easier to grasp when stated as “it is packed with nutrients”. Therefore, wheatgrass is considered as beneficial to our health. Its 30 enzyme components make it a source of complete protein, which should be between 10 to 35% of the total calories we consume since protein is the main building block of the human body. Wheatgrass also provides more energy, thus it is a meal by itself.
Though it is not yet fully substantiated by scientific research, wheatgrass has been known to work wonders. It keeps the body well oxygenated by increasing our red blood cell count. It lowers blood pressure to an optimum level by its vasodilating physiology. It stimulates the thyroid glands and hormones to promote weight loss. It aids in digestion, cleanses the bloodstream and detoxifies the liver. It has both internal and external uses. The extracted juice from wheatgrass can also relieve an itchy skin when applied directly on it.
Well, yes, wheatgrass is all that, and that is why it is very visible in famous health food stores and that wheatgrass juice is on the main menu in juice bars. Some people even grow and juice their own. It usually costs $2 per juice shot and $15 for a tray of growing grass which can be delivered to and readily cut for juicing in your home. In order to do that, you would need a wheatgrass juicer. It is not like the regular juicer for it is well analyzed and manufactured to extract the juice and all the goodness of wheatgrass blades. It is carefully crafted so it would not destroy the enzymes and nutrients of the delicate grass blades in the process. So that’s the wheatgrass juicer, and now your concern is what it tastes like because in any case, it’s still grass. But the juice from a very young wheatgrass plant actually has a sweet honey-like finish. Smoothies or any other juice of your choice can be mixed with wheatgrass juice for refreshment with a natural feel and guilt-free extra nutrition. Kudos to wheatgrass for that!
Now, we don’t need to ask what, how, or why it is made available and advertised at all. Wheatgrass has become a great find in farm markets and local stores.
